A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, who are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

Local restrictions

Many cities and towns have local ordinances limiting the number of pets a person may have, and may also restrict or forbid certain pets (such as fowl or exotics). Certain breeds of dog, such as pit bulls and rottweilers, are banned in some places. Dog/other canid/wolf mixes are also banned in some places.

The cities of Berkeley, California and Boulder, Colorado have passed laws stating that people who have pets do not "own" them; rather, they are the pet's "guardian."

Condominium associations and rental properties often ban animals because of the smells and noise the animals create.

Why do my chia pets only grow seedlings on certain parts?
Q. This is the fourth time I have planted chia seeds on my chia pets and for some reason this time they are only growing on certain parts. I rotate, water, and mist them daily. I have always grown them in the fall and winter; could it be something with the season?

A. Possibly it is the way that you spread them on. It is not an easy task to get them completely even. Some of the tiny seeds tend to clump together. Also they may sprout first in the most environmentally friendly part of the Chia. For example: Part of your Chia may have a slightly different temp than another area on the Chia. Also different parts may be getting slightly different light. Certain areas may hold water more than others. All of this plays a role in the growing process of your Chia. Eventually if one part takes off well, chances are the rest will spread the way it was meant to. Patience is a virtue I often don't have. I hope this info is of help.

What mystery pets can be unlocked with a Free Webkinz online pet code?
Q. I won a free mystery virtual online Webkinz pet in a deck of Series 2 Webkinz trading cards. I was wondering if anyone else has unlocked a mystery pet and if so, what pet did you get? I am asking because I wondered whether to open it using my account or my son's account. He has more pets than I do, so I would not want to adopt a duplicate pet onto his account.

A. I think it has been a variety of different pets, I think I've heard of a lot of Spotted frogs, but I'm not too sure. It says there's a chance of getting a love puppy or a cheeky dog but that is probably like one in a million. You can just check and it would be fine to have a duplicate, you can name it Mystery too.
