In formal education, a curriculum (pronounced /kəˈrɪkjʊləm/; plural: curricula, /kəˈrɪkjʊlə/) is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university. As an idea, curriculum stems from the Latin word for race course, referring to the course of deeds and experiences through which children grow and mature in becoming adults.

A. We are using Alpha Omega Switched on Schoolhouse this year. It is pretty good. There are some things I would change. Next year I will probably use it for math and bible. Maybe language arts, but I am going classical for history and science.

Where can I find resources for writing curriculum?
Q. I'm looking for resources to help write math curriculum for a high school. Questions I have are: What material must be covered? What are the grade expectations for each level?

A. You need to look at state guidelines first. Your state education agency should have a website. Then you need to reconcile those guidelines to district and campus expectations. You also will want to check any assessments your state mandates (like TAKS in Texas) to ensure alignment. My guess is that your state probably already has a curriculum (it's pretty much mandated by NCLB requirements), and what you're needing to write is more of a guide and scope and sequence. A scope and sequence lays out what activities can be done in a particular length of time for a particular topic. For example, a scope and sequence would lay out specific activities for a 5-day set of lessons on tessellations. Doing a key word search will give you… [cont.]

Has anyone used the Everyday Mathematics curriculum to teach?
Q. My students are required to use this curriculum because they will use it in first grade but I find it very difficult to use and very general. Has anyone used this curriculum before? Any advice? Thank you.

A. My son had this when he was in elementary school. I thought it was rather imbecilic, but he survived. He still has an unfortunate tendency to want to multiply using the lattice method, however. I much prefer the old "drill and kill," myself.
