Research can be defined as the search for knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish facts. The primary purpose for applied research (as opposed to basic research) is discovering, interpreting, and the development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge on a wide variety of scientific matters of our world and the universe. Research can use the scientific method, but need not do so.

Scientific research relies on the application of the scientific method, a harnessing of curiosity. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and the properties of the world around us. It makes practical applications possible. Scientific research is funded by public authorities, by charitable organizations and by private groups, including many companies. Scientific research can be subdivided into different classifications according to their academic and application disciplines.

Artistic research, also seen as 'practice-based research', can take form when creative works are considered both the research and the object of research itself. It is the debatable body of thought which offers an alternative to purely scientific methods in research in its search for knowledge and truth.

Historical research is embodied in the scientific method.

The term research is also used to describe an entire collection of information about a particular subject.

What type of scientists research muscular dystrophy?
Q. I'm doing a project on it in school and we're supposed to find out how much money we need in order to research the disease of our choice. (We're not really going to research it, it's a simulation.) I want to know what type of scientist I'm going to need so then I can find out how much they get paid. Do I need a microbiologist, or a geneticist? And, it would be helpful if you told me their yearly salary. Anything else on researching muscular dystrophy would be great!

A. I would suggest checking with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, they have done this for decades and have gotten not a lot closer to finding a "cure", but they do provide much assistance to the families of those affected.

What is stem cell research and how is it connected to abortions?
Q. I hear that abortions can be good in the sense of stem cell research. But I do not know what that is, so if someone could explain to me what it is and how abortion would benefit for stem cell research that would be great. Thanks!

A. The problem came up when they were creating stem cells in a lab, they beleive that destroying stem cells is like destroying life. But now they can get stem cells from living tissue or the yummy leftovers after a birth so there is no need to create them just to destroy them.

What is a good research topic in the field of accounting?
Q. I'm a sophomore in college, and I'm planning on doing research in the field of accounting either this year or next year. I will probably end up writing my thesis on it, so it shouldn't be something basic and boring. It needs to be something that I can actually research and do work on, but nothing too complicated because as I mentioned above, I am only a sophomore in college. If anyone has any ideas, that would be great!

A. The changes over the years in the historical cost principle. It used to be inviolate. Then we had mark-to-market for widely traded marketable securities for some companies. This was when prices and values were generally rising. Now we have write-down of impaired assets. What's next and where will it end? How's that?
