Childbirth (also called labour, birth, partus or parturition) is the culmination of a human pregnancy or gestation period with the birth of one or more newborn infants from a woman's uterus. The process of normal human childbirth is categorized in three stages of labour: the shortening and dilation of the cervix, descent and birth of the infant, and birth of the placenta. In many cases, with increasing frequency, childbirth is achieved through caesarean section, the removal of the neonate through a surgical incision in the abdomen, rather than through vaginal birth. In the U.S. and Canada it represents nearly 1 in 3 (31.8%) and 1 in 4 (22.5%) of all childbirths, respectively. Signs and symptomsNatural childbirth at home.Labour is accompanied by intense and prolonged pain. Pain levels reported by labouring women vary widely. Pain levels appear to be influenced by fear and anxiety levels. Some other factors may include experience with prior childbirth, age, ethnicity, preparation, physical environment and immobility. Hey ladies, I'm a mother of two studying to be a childbirth educator. Just out of curiosity, what were you favourite and least favourite aspects of your childbirth classes. Your advice will help me teach better classes for parents. Many thanks! Asked by naturegirl - Thu Apr 17 17:14:41 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Personally, I loved most of it. The interaction with other pregnant couples, the information, etc. I also like that our instructors were also realistic about pain management options, and were very non judgmental, they covered it very factually. They didn't try to influence you to go natural or to absolutely get an epidural. I didn't like the birth videos, as a first time mother (most are in childbirth classes) they scared the wits out of me. They should have shown some births with women who had epidurals too, to give a balanced view. Good luck!!
