Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the activity of raising a child rather than the biological relationship.

In the case of humans, it is usually done by the biological parents of the child in question, although governments and society take a role as well. In many cases, orphaned or abandoned children receive parental care from non-parent blood relations. Others may be adopted, raised by foster care, or be placed in an orphanage.

The goals of human parenting are debated. Usually, parental figures provide for a child's physical needs, protect them from harm, and impart in them skills and cultural values until they reach legal adulthood, usually after adolescence. Among non-human species, parenting is usually less lengthy and complicated, though mammals tend to nurture their young extensively. The degree of attention parents invest in their offspring is largely inversely proportional to the number of offspring the average adult in the species produces.

How do you make parenting decisions with your significant other?
Q. I'm just curious how other people do this or if there is even a decision at all. My husband and I have two totally different ideas of parenting but somehow we do pretty good together through compromise and strategy. So, how do you make parenting decisions? Does one person do the majority of the parenting? Do you even discuss parenting with your significant? I'm just curious! Thanks! One more question--are your kids involved in parenting decisions?

A. my sons dad and i are seperated, but still communicate regularly for the benefit of our son, and when we've had to make specific decisions, we've talked about it and listened to each others opinions, decided which we both thought would work, tried it and if it didn't work, try the next thing. I think its best to both contribute, and different ideas can work together with compromise.

Do you think the majority of parents take parenting seriously?
Q. I'm not talking about you personally. I'm talking about parents in general as a whole. Do you think parents (even when their children are at a young age) practice foresight? Do you think parents really take that responsibility to heart--almost like a job--and do their best? Now, I m talking about you. How do you feel about parenting books in general? What is your main concern as a parent? Do you think the parents who do not take parenting seriously will some day have an effect on your own children? I m just curious. I ve been noticing more and more my own awareness of parenting. I ve been really nervous (as I m sure many parents are) about what I do now and the effects it will have on my children later. By all means, I m… [cont.]

A. I think its hard not to take parenting seriously. Most people love their children and try to do what is best for them. The problem is that there is no best. What works for one child or family may not work for another. Also, parents are limited by their experience, knowledge, and faults. If parents try to take parenting too seriously, they start to deny their children some of the joys of childhood, love, adventure, etc. I think most parents struggle with trying to make sure their children have a good time in life while trying to make sure they learn the rules as well. It's easy to fall to far one way or the other. As far as experts, I take a little from here and little from there. If I am having a problem, I will search the child… [cont.]

What happens to a Fathers rights if he moves and is unable to continue shared parenting?
Q. I am being transferred out of state and I currently have 2 small children , ( 4,6) . We are divorced with shared parenting agreement. Will we need to go to court to give her full custody or if we agree will nothing be done?? Anyone have a similar scenario? Thanks

A. first try to sit down and work it out with mom... try to get a written agreement between just the 2 of you, see how that goes... If there is any hint of a problem, drop it, and seek legal advise... No sense in a huge argument and making matters worse... But, I would say, do all this BEFORE moving... Don't move and then try to work it all out... go in peace... God bless

  • Parenting is among the most personal choices anyone ever makes. At the same time, no other individual decision has as significant a societal impact. Finding a careful balance between personal autonomy and the public welfare is often a considerable challenge.
  • Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter when she was tidying up her children's minds. It is the nightly custom of every good mother after her children are asleep to rummage through their minds and put things straight for next morning, repacking into their proper places the many articles that have wandered during the day. If you could keep awake (but of course you can't) you would see your own mother doing this, and you would find it very interesting to watch her. It is quite like tidying up drawers. You would see her on her knees, I expect, lingering humourously over some of your contents, wondering where on earth you had picked this thing up, making discoveries sweet and not so sweet, pressing this to her cheek as if it were a kitten, and hurriedly stowing that out of sight. When you wake up in the morning, the naughtiness and evil passions with which you went to bed have been folded up small and placed at the bottom of your mind; and on the top, beautifully aired, are spread out your prettier thoughts, ready for you to put on.
